A little background on Chard:

In the Domesday Book, Chard was called Cerdre, which means house on the rough ground in Old English. In the 14th century, there was a fulling mill in Chard, so there was a thriving textile industry at that time. By the 19th century, lace manufacture was well established, with Bowden's Old Lace Factory and the Gifford Fox factory having been constructed.

The current Town Hall was built in 1834 as a Corn Exchange and Guildhall. One of the oldest buildings in Chard is the original school building in Fore Street, which was built in 1583. The owner conveyed the property to 12 trustees to convert it from a house into a grammar school.
